Some of Our Case Studies

National Grid’s ‘Viking Link’ Interconnector

EGEMS were engaged by Italian-based Prysmian Group to assist with the installation of two 500m on-to-offshore cable conduits. This was a critical programme milestone in the installation of a €700m 1250km high voltage submarine interconnector, known as the ‘Viking Link’.

The installation, via horizontal direction drill, presented unique challenges: the highly unpredictable nature of the coastal geology; the extremely high profile of the project and the stakeholder sensitivities within the local environment.

EGEMS was selected for our proven ability to provide vital assurance on - and visibility of - key environmental aspects to Prysmian’s remote management teams.

This was delivered through the provision of high quality, detailed photo- and video-illustrated site visit reports, and the measured application of improvement coaching to their drilling specialist subcontractor.

Croston Sewer Network Upgrade

Our client, Bethell were commissioned by United Utilities to undertake a £250,000 sewer network upgrade, needed to provide additional storm water detention capacity. This included the excavation of 500 metres of highway and environmentally sensitive work within the greenbelt .

Bethell engaged EGEMS to leverage our expertise and experience with working with utilities companies like United Utilities. We were tasked to identify and mitigate the project's key environmental risks, and to help them develop cost-effective mitigation controls.

This was delivered via the production of detailed yet succinct method statements, which were illustrated with easy-to-interpret technical drawings. Their correct implementation was supervised via frequent site visits by EGEMS, who produced comprehensive photographic reports, which provided invaluable assurance for their stakeholders.

United Utilities' Water Network Upgrade

Our client, Mott Macdonald Bentley (MMB) were undertaking a £25m upgrade of United Utilities' network. Following identification of various environmental challenges at the early stages of the project, MMB engaged EGEMS to assist their site management team in developing and delivering a step-change improvement to the project's environmental management performance.

EGEMS collaborated closely with MMB site team, undertaking weekly assurance site visits, providing coaching, developing incident response processes, and then integrating key lessons learned into working practices. EGEMS liaised regularly with the project's regulatory stakeholders to provide them with the transparency and assurance of how improvements were being implemented.

Through this approach, EGEMS supported MMB’s team in successfully delivering significant improvements in the frequency and quality of their operations’ environmental management practices, and minimised the risk of regulatory enforcement involvement.

As a result, MMB, United Utilities and their regulatory stakeholder were overwhelmingly positive about the performance improvements, progression in making proactive interventions, and ultimately the project’s timely delivery.
